Compromise- it's how the sausage gets made.
It's the reason why the nation's capital is Washington, DC and the financial capital is NYC.
Yes, I'm a big fan of Hamilton. And Washington. And Lincoln. And TR. And FDR.
What did they all have in common? Vision. Pragmatism. The Union. The people.
Who wasn't for the people? Nixon. Andrew Johnson. James Buchanan. The current resident.
Governing is hard. You don't always get what you want. Obama couldn't make the exchanges mandatory for all states, so he took what he could get and hundreds of millions of Americans are all the better for it. FDR was able to provide military aid to Great Britain during WWII through Lend Lease, an agreement that Congress accepted that returned the military aid after the war. LBJ using his force of will to pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which had the unfortunate impact of handing the South to the GOP. And, it's not always good. Rutherford B. Hayes became the 19th President as a result of agreeing to end Reconstruction, which was disastrous to African Americans. John Quincy Adams became our 6th President upon agreeing to make Henry Clay his Secretary of State when the election was thrown in the House of Representatives.
Compromise is discussion- giving up something you want to get something you want even more. We would not be where we are as a country without it.
We will not get to where we want to be as a country without it.
It's applicable to legislating.
It's applicable for elections.
It's applicable for every day kitchen table issues.
It's what happens when we talk, listen & discuss- respectfully.
Let's Talk, Learn, Engage and Advocate to Save America.
